What is a Work for the Dole Sponsor?
Work for the Dole sponsors are non-profit organisations, including charities, church and religious groups, local community associations and service organisations, local, State and Commonwealth Government organisations and agencies.
Sponsor organisations provide the actual work experience placements for participants within their organisation or the local community. Some Community Work Co-ordinators are also sponsor organisations.
What do Sponsors do?
Sponsors provide work experience for participants in Work for the Dole. They work with Community Work Coordinators in managing the placement of participants so that both the placement and the work experience activity are succesful.
What do Community Work Coordinators do?
Community Work Coordinators develop and manage Work for the Dole places in the employment service area in which they are contracted. Community Work Coordinators tailor placements to the individual needs of job seekers and their local communities.
What sort of activities are conducted by sponsors?
These are some of the recent activities sponsors have provided:
- Caring for the environment
- Looking after sick water birds and returning them to a river or sanctuary
- Fencing bushland and building shelters to form a protected site for endangered wildlife
- Helping to construct fire breaks and fire trails to reduce bushfires in an old growth forest
- Caring for our heritage
- Helping out in emergency situations such as natural disasters Assisting in a community child care centre
- Caring for people
- Restoring an old gaol to Heritage Council guidelines and converting it into a community centre
- Recording local history, including research, interviews, taking photographs and locating old photographs and drawings for illustration
- Restoring historic military vehicles for display in a museum
- Caring for the community Building community recreational facilities including picnic areas, a sports field and pathways
- Transforming an old house into a community child care centre
- Repairing donated computers and installing them in community organisations
- Designing sets and costumes, writing plays and music and giving live performances to school children and at community festivals
What fees are paid for Work for the Dole activities?
Work experience fees are paid for items related to the actual costs of running a Work for the Dole activity including:
- Hiring a supervisor for the duration of the activity
- Providing materials: such as wood, sand or paint
- Providing equipment: such as gloves, hard hats or work boots
- Providing money for advertising or promoting your activity
To become a sponsor, you must apply through a Community Work Coordinator, who will send your application to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to be approved.
